Solano Real Estate Scene: Jim Porter

We asked for it and now we have it. We started questioning the tobacco companies after the U.S. Surgeon General released the landmark report in 1964 that linked smoking cigarettes to lung cancer and heart disease.

By the 1980s, some of us started to quit, and by the 1990s, smoking became practically outlawed. Nonsmokers asked to be free of the smell and smokers asked for nicotine patches, and we now have it.

We started asking for a solution to our obesity numbers in the United States after coming in first place in 2017 for population at 109 million obese Americans, a full 12 million more than second place China and a whopping 44 million more than third place India. Both countries have a billion more humans in their fast-food drive-thrus.

Americans spend $275 billion per year on diet and weight loss products and what do you know, by accident, the newest diabetes drug has an unexpected side effect, which is weight loss.

Thinner and smoke-free people are great, however, one of the problems with these health improvements is that this will extend our lives and Social Security, Medicare and government pension plans were designed in the 1950s and 1960s, and all based on men dying at 77 and women dying at 82. I would not be surprised if the average for women will be 95 and men 90 by 2030.

Two things are happening today because people are already outliving their money. Gen-Xers and Baby Boomers are adding ADUs in their back yards for mom, and some seniors are building ADUs for themselves to move into at some point and then rent out the big house for income or have their grown kids and grandkids move into the big house.
